Bemis and Eisner Research Scholarships: Undergraduate Summer Research in Europe
Application due March 1, 2018
General Information: Offered to undergraduate students at Washington University to undertake an original project in Europe during the summer after Sophomore or Junior year. Students currently studying abroad may apply!
Projects can be in any field provided that research in Europe is a necessary condition for its successful completion. Recently funded proposals have included:
- A study of sustainable agriculture practices on organic farms in Spain, France, and Greece
- Analysis of current methods of displaying and explaining ancient artifacts in the museums of important archaeological sites in Italy
- Participation in a French digital humanities project coupled with independent research on French poet Rimbaud
- Archival research in multiple London libraries examining the transformation of Indian agricultural practices after World War I
Frequently, projects have been connected to thesis work, but this is not a requirement of the scholarship. Priority will be given to those proposals that can clearly articulate the resources they will draw upon in Europe (library or archival collections, specific sites for field work in the social or natural sciences, or art collections or architectural monuments).
Please note that topics that have no specific European content, or proposals that consist of language study, a structured summer study abroad program, or travel without a specific focus will not be competitive.
